Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, originates from the cannabis family, including the marijuana and hemp plants. CBD is one of 100+ compounds or cannabinoids that make up these plants, with THC being the most well-known cannabinoid.
What is CBD: Misconceptions
A Popular Misconception about CBD: CBD differs from THC in that it does not get you “high” and may actually counteract the psychoactivity effects of THC. Instead of using CBD recreationally, many people use it for its medicinal properties.
Why Do People Use CBD?
While it has a broad range of healing possibilities, the most popular uses for CBD include for anti-inflammation, anti-anxiety, as a pain reducer, and to support the nervous system. The FDA has not approved CBD for the above uses, though it did clear CBD for treating seizures in epilepsy patients in 2018.
In December 2018, the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research published a study that surveyed 2,400 people who said that they take CBD medically over recreationally and that almost half of those users are not THC users. Most people in the study used CBD for chronic and arthritis pain, followed by anxiety, insomnia, depression, and PTSD. Over 35 percent of respondents claimed that CBD worked “very well,” with just 4 percent saying it did not have an effect.
Can CBD Be Harmful?
While there are few instances of harmful side effects due to CBD, the biggest caution for using the cannabinoid is choosing a reputable brand as there is no FDA regulation to the claims of the amount of CBD in products on the market. (Kore Original has the highest standards for any CBD brand, with a quad-testing process and 3rd party lab testing for purity and potency.)
How Do I Take CBD?
CBD can be taken in a variety of forms from tinctures (oil) to edibles to topicals.
What is CBD: In Summary
In a nutshell, CBD has been making waves for its medicinal properties. Unlike THC, CBD won’t get you “high” and may even lessen THC’s psychoactive effects. People enjoy CBD for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and pain-slaying powers, among other perks. FDA gave it a thumbs-up for treating seizures in epilepsy patients, but CBD fans are also using it for chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and more.
